Major League Baseball (MLB) has issued one permanent ban and four one-year suspensions to players found to have breached sports betting rules.
Under MLB Rule 21, any player, umpire or club official who bets on any baseball game in which the individual has influence will be subject to a permanent ban. Those who bet on matches in which they have no direct influence are subject to a maximum suspension of one year.
