Missouri Gaming Commission names new executive director

13th September 2024 8:30 am GMT

The Missouri Gaming Commission has appointed Mike Leara as executive director to succeed the retiring Peggy Richardson.

Leara previously served as chairman of the Commission from August 2019 until July 2023 when he was appointed by Governor Mike Parson as the State Supervisor for the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control.

Leara also served as a State Representative for the 96th District between 2009 and 2017, during which time he served as vice chair on the Board of Trustees for the Missouri State Employee Retirement System.

Leara will replace former circuit judge Richardson, who is retiring after three years as the Commission’s executive director.

Leera's appointment comes as Missouri looks to expand its existing riverboat gambling market, with proposals to legalise sports betting and establish a new casino near the Lake of the Ozarks included in this November's ballot.

Missouri’s gambling market declined by 9 per cent in July as adjusted gross revenue fell to $155.2 million, with Ameristar St Charles the market leader with $24.1 million, ahead of River City’s $20.7 million and Hollywood St Louis’ $20.6 million.
